Our campaign learned this morning of the resignation of
Sidney Coles, NDP candidate for Toronto-St. Paul’s, after baseless tweets
linking Israel to vaccine shortages. While deeply disappointed in her original
comments, we commend Ms. Coles for doing the right thing and stepping down. We
encourage her to reflect on how antisemitic tropes are easily propagated.
Statistics Canada reported 2,669 hate crimes in 2020, part of a troubling five-year rise. We know that Jewish Canadians and other religious minorities face a disproportionate number of these incidents, including here in Toronto-St. Paul’s. We must do better and be kinder, especially online where so much of this discourse festers. All Canadians deserve to login into social media accounts free from vitriol and false accusations just as they deserve to be safe in their homes and places of worship.
We wish you all a successful voting day and look forward to serving the community during the upcoming parliament.
Our campaign is funded by grassroots supporters like you who chip in what they can, when they can.
We need your help to make bold change. Work with us to build a better Canada.
Toronto-St. Paul’s is on the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples.
